Dr. Dimitrios Baltzis, consultant internist-diabetologist, currently serves as the Head of the Diabetes & Diabetic Foot Clinic at Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He was born in 1976 in a small town called Ierissos, near Mount Athos, Greece. He completed his medical degree at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2003, and began his residency as an internal medicine physician at the 3rd Department of Internal Medicine, Papageorgiou General Hospital, Thessaloniki, in 2007. الدكتور ديمتريوس بالتزيس، استشاري الباطنية وأمراض السكري، يشغل حالياً منصب رئيس عيادة السكري والقدم السكري في مستشفى المواساة بالدمام بالمملكة العربية السعودية. ولد عام 1976 في بلدة صغيرة تدعى إيريسوس، بالقرب من جبل آثوس في اليونان. أتم دراسته الطبية في جامعة أرسطو بثيسالونيكي عام 2003، وبدأ إقامته في الطب الباطني في المستشفى العام باباجورجيو في ثيسالونيكي عام 2007.
At the same time he served in the Greek Army as a physician, receiving an official award for saving a soldier's life. He also worked as a rural physician. Following his residency, he continued his training in diabetes and diabetic foot at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center — the main teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School — in the United States. He was trained as a Clinical Research Fellow at the Microcirculation Lab and the Joslin-Beth Israel Deaconess Foot Center, Harvard Medical School, from October 2012 to May 2016. في الوقت ذاته خدم في الجيش اليوناني طبيباً، وحصل على جائزة رسمية لإنقاذ حياة جندي. عمل أيضاً طبيباً ريفياً. بعد إتمام إقامته، واصل تدريبه في مجال السكري والقدم السكري في مركز بيت إسرائيل الطبي — المستشفى التعليمي الرئيسي لكلية هارفارد الطبية — في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، حيث تدرب كزميل بحوث سريرية في مختبر دوران الأوعية الدقيقة ومركز جوسلين للقدم، من أكتوبر 2012 حتى مايو 2016.
Recognising that diabetes mellitus is a global epidemic and that obesity is its primary driving force, Dr. Baltzis sought to acquire additional theoretical and practical expertise by completing a Master's degree in Food Science and Nutrition. He also completed a PhD at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in collaboration with Harvard Medical School, dealing with peripheral diabetic neuropathy, myocardial ischaemia, telomerase activity, and the role of mast cell degranulation in diabetic foot. He has received fellowship awards twice from the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) and twice from the Hellenic Association for the Study and Education of Diabetes (HASED). إدراكاً منه أن داء السكري وباء عالمي تغذّيه السمنة بالدرجة الأولى، سعى الدكتور بالتزيس إلى اكتساب خبرة نظرية وعملية إضافية من خلال إتمام درجة الماجستير في علوم الأغذية والتغذية. وأتم أيضاً درجة الدكتوراه في جامعة أرسطو بثيسالونيكي بالتعاون مع كلية هارفارد الطبية، متناولاً اعتلال الأعصاب السكري المحيطي، وإقفار عضلة القلب، ونشاط التيلوميراز، ودور تحبيب الخلايا البدينة في القدم السكري. وقد حصل على زمالتين من الرابطة الأوروبية لدراسة السكري (EASD) وزمالتين من الرابطة اليونانية لدراسة وتعليم السكري (HASED).
Dr. Baltzis focused particularly on diabetic complications — especially microcirculation, diabetic neuropathy, and wound healing — driven primarily by his deep interest in the problem of the diabetic foot, the leading cause of non-traumatic lower extremity amputation worldwide. His current work centres on the treatment of diabetes, prevention of diabetic complications, and when complications arise, providing the best possible clinical care. ركّز الدكتور بالتزيس بشكل خاص على مضاعفات السكري — لا سيما دوران الأوعية الدقيقة، واعتلال الأعصاب السكري، والتئام الجروح — مدفوعاً باهتمامه العميق بمشكلة القدم السكري، السبب الرئيسي للبتر في الطرف السفلي غير الناجم عن صدمة في العالم. ويتمحور عمله الحالي حول علاج مرض السكري والوقاية من مضاعفاته، وعند حدوثها تقديم أفضل رعاية طبية ممكنة.
During his fellowship at Harvard Medical School, he was engaged in translational and clinical research on the interaction between neuropathy and microvascular disease in the development of diabetic foot ulceration and subsequent wound healing. He collaborated with various departments at this institution and others, and worked alongside clinical physicians in their routine practice, participating in evaluations and discussions on patient progress and treatment. As a result, he is highly experienced in managing diabetic patients with complications, particularly those with diabetic neuropathy and diabetic foot ulceration, applying the most rigorous clinical principles. خلال زمالته في كلية هارفارد الطبية، انخرط في البحوث الانتقالية والسريرية المتعلقة بالتفاعل بين اعتلال الأعصاب والأمراض الوعائية الدقيقة في تطور تقرح القدم السكري وما يعقبه من التئام الجروح. تعاون مع أقسام مختلفة في هذه المؤسسة وغيرها، وعمل جنباً إلى جنب مع الأطباء الإكلينيكيين في ممارستهم اليومية. ونتيجةً لذلك، يتمتع بخبرة واسعة في إدارة حالات مرضى السكري الذين يعانون من مضاعفاته، وفق أدق المبادئ السريرية.
Another special area of interest is the effect of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) on cardiovascular function in diabetic and non-diabetic subjects, as the two conditions very often coexist. He currently participates in translational and clinical studies evaluating the interaction of diabetes and OSA and the effect of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy in improving cardiovascular function in diabetic patients. He also participates in studies investigating the role of sleep deficit on endothelial function. من اهتماماته الخاصة الأخرى تأثير توقف التنفس الانسدادي أثناء النوم (OSA) على وظيفة القلب والأوعية الدموية لدى مرضى السكري وغيرهم، إذ كثيراً ما يتعايش المرضان. ويشارك حالياً في دراسات انتقالية وسريرية تقيّم التفاعل بين السكري وهذا الاضطراب، وتأثير علاج ضغط المجرى الهوائي الإيجابي المستمر (CPAP) في تحسين وظيفة القلب والأوعية الدموية لدى مرضى السكري، فضلاً عن دراسات تبحث في دور الحرمان من النوم على وظيفة البطانة الوعائية.
Additionally, he participates in clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of various new therapeutic approaches, providing him with considerable experience in organising or participating in clinical trials that can lead to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Medicine Agency (EMA) approval of the tested products. يشارك كذلك في التجارب السريرية التي تقيّم فعالية مناهج علاجية جديدة متنوعة، مما أكسبه خبرة واسعة في تنظيم التجارب السريرية أو المشاركة فيها التي قد تفضي إلى الحصول على موافقة إدارة الغذاء والدواء الأمريكية (FDA) ووكالة الأدوية الأوروبية (EMA).
